What are some alternative approaches to addiction treatment (non 12-step)??

Question: what are the similarities/ differences to 12-step methods.... advantages and disadvantages
Answers: First make up your mind. Join a religious group and be with them all the twenty four hours for some weeks whatever affordable, without alcohal / drug. Think about your final destiny.
Addictions usually start as mental but many becomes a physical addiction which makes the it more powerful. So you really need a 2 part approach, one to address each. (I think the 12-step only addresses the mental.)

For the physical, try a body cleanse. It helps to clear the toxins in your system that create the illusion that you can't live without it. When you consume toxins and then stop, as the toxins leave, it makes you think you are sick because you aren't taking them. What really happens is that as they leave, they have to travel through your body on their way out and that's when you really feel it. If you can get through that part, you are half-way there. Taking supplements (like for a colon cleanse) can help them leave quicker. Also, a supplement called NAC helps to get chemicals out of the body. But you have to eat right at the same time. The first few days is the hardest.

To help you get through the mental addiction, find friends, a support group or a church for a support group. You have to keep yourself busy with positive input. You also have to constantly remind yourself why you want to change. Making a mental picture of yourself the way you want yourself to be is supposed to be a very powerful technique (visualization) to help people with change for the better. It's widely used among athletes and performers before competition or shows. No matter which of these you choose, I think you have to make a commitment to do something (prayer, visualization) every day - like every time you want to do your bad habit.

This second part is similar to the 12-step methods - you must communicate with others. Also, in the 12-step you must give yourself up to a higher power, like in a religion. In either case, the bottom line is that it isn't easy and you do have to make up your mind to do it without excuses. ( There's nothing as bad as a good excuse. - Reverend Ike)
Two alternatives to 12 step are meditation and embracing Buddhism (which works) and a huge dose of LSD to burn the craving out of your body (which works). You think about why these work and are better than 12 step. One more thing--being jailed is the best de-tox in the world.

Massage helps by releasing hormones into the body that most people who are addicted are lacking ( that's why they use drugs, to get that feel good feeling). It also inhibits the release of certain hormones that are found when one is under stress, therefore it relieves stress and relaxes the individual receiving the massage. I would suggest trying it, you'll be surprised at how you feel after even the first session. The action of massage on the muscles also helps to rid your body of toxins that build up overtime and enhance healing. I can go on forever about this, but I'll stop here. Remember one should only use massage along with another recovery program and while working closely with your physician. Does this help?
