Can I double a melatonin dose??

Question: I just bought melatonin because I haven't slept in a week (Yeah, I mean NO sleep). I took a dose last night, and it worked ok. The directions say to take one 5mg tablet. Can I safely take 2?
Answers: I wouldn't. If you get too much Melatonin, it would increase your Serotonin too much, which would actually give the opposite effect (wake you up). I would recommend sticking with the dose listed on the bottle unless a doctor says otherwise.
Also, Melatonin has a better long-term effect than a short-term effect, so it will help you to sleep better over time than right away, but many people get benefits the first night. Good luck!
There is little risk in doubling the dosage. However, I can't say it will work any better. Please consider seeing a doctor, especially if you think there is any risk of depression. Also, if you buy supplements, choose good brands. NutritionalTree.com (http://www.nutritionaltree.com) is a good unbiased place to research brands.
I wouldn't take it in pill form anyway, I use a natural remedy to build natural melatonin within my body the way it's suppose to be. Synthetics are so wrong.
Yes, you can take more, but here's how I'd suggest you do it. Take the recommended 5 mg about a half hour before bedtime. Put another tablet by the bedside in case you wake up and feel like you can't get back to sleep. If this is 4 hours or more before you are due to get up, take the second dose.
I honestly would suggest to just take the recommended doseage, you don't want to OD and you don't want anything else to happen to you. Go by what it says and you should be safe....
