I have an overbite that has gotten alot bigger quickly , i realized that when i sleep i push on my teeth??

Question: is there something that can hold my tounge back?
Answers: You are a tongue thruster and yes there is actually a device that holds your tongue back.

When I was about 9 or 10 I had a device that I no longer can remember what it was called (something like a 'crib') to hold my tongue down in it's correct position. I had it for about 6 months and it was meant to correct my tongue thrust. It was two metal bands that were glued around my back teeth and then a thin metal bar that ran along the sides of my top teeth then curved down across to hold my tongue down.

Basically a tongue thrust means that you never developed a 'mature' swallowing pattern and remained with your infantile one, which is usually caused by a child sucking their thumb when they were an infant, but other factors can contribute. It can be corrected in 70% of cases with some form of device or speech therapy.

Despite the fact I had this device, my tongue thrust was never fully corrected and even after I have had braces I still have an overbite even though my teeth are perfectly straight, because the tongue thrusting did not only push my teeth out, but my top jaw slightly. Basically this means that because I still have a minor tongue thrust now that after I have finished with my retainer from having braces, a thin metal bar will be permanently glued inside my teeth, so that my tongue can not push them out of line ever again. Also I kind of pronounce the 'th' sound a bit funny, more like an 'f' because of it.

The most commonly recognisable feature of a tongue thrust is that when you just sit with your face relaxed and normal your lips do not naturally meet together and you may have a small gap where your front teeth show through. Why this can't be fixed without jaw surgery, don't worry if you have it - I noticed Kate Moss does too.
Nope, not that I know of. My dentist took out my wisdom teeth and then the next set of top molars. That helped.
