Any advice on how I can recover more quickly and minimise any risks after today's wisdom tooth extraction??

Question: My doctor gave me medicine but not any advice
Answers: I find that giving a person a reason WHY not to do things helps too. Don't smoke because the pulling can cause a negitive pressure and possibly cause the blood clot forming to dislodge....same with drinking thru a straw. Dont gargle or swish because that can cause the blood clot to dislodge also. If a blood clot dislodges you will get what is known as a dry socket Which I have heard hurts worse then any toothache. Just take it EZ and eat what is comfortable for you to eat.
Check this site out. Has all the after-care info you need. Happy healing!
In addition to the other good advice given above, KEEP THE GAUZE IN YOUR MOUTH FOR HOURS AND HOURS! It's like a Band-Aid. I tell my patients to bite on the gauze, even if they have to change it every so often, until they go to BED on the day of surgery. I have an extremely low incidence of dry socket in my practice, like only one or two a year at most.
Avoid solid food for at least 5 days. Check the holes in a mirror every day to see if they are closing properly. They should slowly close over a period of a week or so.
Also for the next 5 days:
Don't smoke.
Don't drink soda or anything through a straw.
Don't suck really hard on anything(popsicles, for example)
Don't chew gum.
eat soft foods for the first couple days....gargel with salt water 3-4 times a day. I'm not sure what the dentist gave you for 'medicine' but follow the prescription. If it is for pain take it when you first notice you are having pain....the longer you wait the harder is too control your pain. If it's an antibiotic remember to finish the whole course of it.
You should be feeling fine in a couple of days. Your jaw will be sore.
Hope this helps you.
Ice and Advil... Ice your jaw for 15 -20 minutes every hour for the first 8 hours or so... and don't be afraid of the pain meds (unless they make you sick) I was back on my feet the day after my surgery, but my jaw looked like I'd been in a fight. also, get plenty of rest the first day.
