My son is getting braces.....??

Question: he is 11 and wants to know what colors are cool for boys and do they hurt when they first put them on and if so how long?
Answers: I had braces for 1 year and 10 months. As for what colors are cool for boys, most guys I know like to get blues and blacks. Don't get red; red looks like blood. Don't get yellow; it makes your teeth look yellow. Don't get white; it makes your teeth look yellow also. And just try to avoid getting colors too flashy or bright. When I had braces, I stuck to light blue most of the time, which is a safe choice. I also got mellow shades of green and purple.
Also, it's a good idea to stick to all one color. Or at least stick to just one color on the upper teeth and just one color on the lower teeth.

I won't lie to you here. When they put the braces on, it only feels tight. It doesn't hurt. If your son has ever worn retainers, he'll know how this feels. It's not a bad feeling but later on it gets a lot worse. Braces were very painful for me BUT taking Advil or Tylenol will definitely help A LOT. And the braces stop hurting after a few days. You get used to them to the point where you can't even feel it.

I'll tell you right now that the wax the orthodontist will give you won't help. I never really used Orajel or Anbesol, but they would probably help a lot better than wax. The wax just doesn't melt and doesn't stick to your teeth, gums, and braces. The most important thing is to take Advil and eat lots of soft foods... canned peaches, ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies, etc. He's probably going to be a milkshake-for-dinner diet for a few days.

Braces were quite painful for me, but if I had been more consistent about taking enough Advil and taking it frequently enough, it wouldn't have hurt so bad.

Tell your son not to worry too much. The pain goes away soon and it's worth it for beautiful teeth. I used to have horribly crooked teeth, including an overbite and buck teeth. Less than 2 years of braces made my teeth beautiful and it's very worth it!
It doesn't hurt until they tighten them, so he has at least a month. Tylenol before the visits help.

Green is for boys.

Parent of braces kid and former braces kid myself.
Many including myself wore braces.Explain to him it is a rather common thing, don't let him box,I got one of mine knocked off the tooth that way.Retired undefeated as a note.I also had to wear headgear for a little while. So what,he will look great after it's over.Best wishes.
I didnt know they came in colors. As for the pain, it is slight getting worse when they get tightened, but not intolerable.
Just get plain metal, nothing manlier than that. They don't hurt too badly when they're put on.
Boys usually go for the darker colors. Blue, usually.

As far as if it hurts when they first put them on...that depends on your orthodontist. Some tighten them pretty tight when the put them on and some dont. You could talk to your dr. about not making them too tight. Sometimes it's better to take it slow with the tightening. He might have to wear the braces a little bit longer but I think it's worth it to have less discomfort. Especially for an 11 year old.
Their gonna feel very tight for like a week and a halve and then he start to get use to him. he will be ok! I think the color silver or blue will be a cool color!
Braces are a wire that are attached to brackets on the teeth, pulling them into the perfect semi-circle that make up a good set of teeth. By doing this, the wire hooks onto the bracket, pulling the root of the teeth with the gums to the desired area. This is what causes the pain, and yes, it will hurt him. However, if he doesn't pick at them, the pain should come and go naturally over time. If he does pick at them,he could damage the brace and cause permanent damage to his teeth, causing him lots of pain that may take a lot more time to fix. As far as colours go, the standard grey is the most popular with black as a runner-up. He'll get to pick his own colours, so not to worry.
Don't worry if he complains about the pain, an advil or two will get rid of irritations and if that's not enough, get some Anbesol, a liquid novicain.
I haven't had braces for 20 years but I do remember that they DO hurt after they are put on. I remember right after I got them put on, I went and had a huge lunch because the orthodontist said i would be uncomfortable for a while afterwards. Boy, was that an understatement. It doesn't hurt right away, though. I am so glad I had that big lunch! I don't remember exactly how long it hurt but I would guess for about a week. Also hurts after they adjust them (every month or so I think).
My male patients wear all kinds of colors...it is an expression of who you are or of the team that you support. I would recommend that he check out the possibilities on the Internet (www.earlyyearsortho.com/bands.asp) You can change your colors each time you go for an adjustment.

As far as whether they hurt, I would tell you that at his age they generally are tender for about three days after an adjustment. I have braces on myself right now. It is good to get to experience what my patients are feeling. Invisalign is a good system for some cases, but usually not for an 11 year old. Treatment will go smoothly if he takes good care of his mouth by brushing and flossing. I recommend a Sonicare toothbrush. The most important thing is to avoid breakage by staying away from hard, sticky, and chewy things. Good luck!
Look at this sight they come in lots of colours!

DON'T GET METAL BRACES. They have a different kind now. that are pretty much painless and you remove them and then put them back in and they are virtually invisible. They are called invisilign. check it out:

Hot pink and other neon colors are in this year... Of course, it might change next year! Tell your son to be careful... He could be hip one year and look ridiculous the next!

There's no doubt they hurt... Do you think someone putting metal fixtures in your mouth wouldn't hurt?? Just wait until they start tightening them up.... now that's pain!!!
I just got my braces today, and it is actually cool now.At first it will feel very weird, then about 2-3 more hrs. you can eat and it won't hurt as much. Also I am a girl and I got pink he should get blue and green in patterns it looks cool or any other color or two colors he likes .To me it doesn't hurt, but it may start hurting as your teeth get pulled into place.Later on you'll get used to it and your mouth will feel much more comfortable!!Always use wax...believe it or not you can get cut.
I would look into invisaline. They are completly invisible. If those are not an option I would go with what ever his favorite color is. Just stay away from green. I have seen people with braces that had a green tint to them and it made it look like their teeth was rotting.
I am 11 years old and i all ready had braces and got them off it does hurt that much. I only had my braces in for 3 months it all depends. Cool colors for boys would be probaly Blue and blckor or school colors or his favorite team's colors if you have any other Questions email me at aeropostalepenguin@yahoo.com
