Is BPD common??
Question: Is being bi-polar common?
I take medication for it but I want to know exactly what it is and why I need to take medication for it. I'm only 14 and I don't want to be considered crazy for having BPD.
Answers: I am not sure what the stats are on Bipolar Disorder although I know that there are lots of people, famous and not so famous that have the disorder. Kay Redfield Jamison, who works and Johns Hopkins Hospital, has the disorder and has written several books on it. I believe Robin Williams and countless others have been diagnosed as well. I am one of the less famous people with the disorder.
Bipolar disorder is a chemical imbalance in your brain. It has to do with dopamine and seratonin and the neurotransmitters in your brain. Too much of one chemical will much you manic, too little seratonin will cause depression. The medicine helps to balance the chemicals and sometimes affects how they are absorbed in your brain.
So no you are not crazy if you have the disorder, and the reason you have to take medicine is to help balance the chemicals in your brain, which in turn affects your mood, which in turn affects your actions.
The medication doesn't take away your personality, I actually like myself much better on it most days of the week. I however cycle in mixed states so its like you are depressed and hypomanic at the same time...NO FUN. When I am not on medication for a significant period of time...usually 3 months, I am apt to stop sleeping at night, act extremely wrecklessly, have little to no control over any emotions, think people are talking about me, go from one extreme to another, stop eating and I eventually lose my ability to function at work and then end up in the hospital.
14 is a little early for a diagnosis and I know many doctors are hesitant to treat the disorder in children and teens, this being said if you have a family history, or a good doctor you may know sooner.
Disclosing your diagnosis is always up to you. The Americans with Disabilities Act and the Hippa Privacy Laws protect this type of information from being released.
There are websites and forums online where you can find out more information or someone at the Psychatrist's office can help you too. I had to find out a lot on my own and after being hospitalized twice I figured I better do something to figure it out. I have awesome doctors now, who have really helped me out but its taken me 7 years...so be patient.
A lot but I hope it helps. E-mail me if you need more info or anything.
Good lucK. :)
I'm bipolar and as long as I take my meds I dont consider myself crazy!! Bipolar is mainly mood swings, bad mood swings and depression. one could go to the point of killing somebody if they cant control themselves and not even realize it. anxiety plays a role in it, paranoia, look it up and see what it tells you. I take lithium, prozac, and vistaril for it.
well there is a lot of ppl who have it but its not that common
I too have been diagnosed with BPD. What is the name of the medication? You're not crazy. Bipolar means highs and lows, but not like everyone else. Episodes of severe depression (disturbances in eating, sleeping, sex drive, pleasure, etc.) and mania (racing thoughts, irrational connections, intense euphoria, not sleeping, irritability) Tell me the name of the med, and I can help u understand what it is. In the meantime, google bipolar disorder. webMD is a pretty goos resource. Don't be scared, it's very common.
