Should I get on medication for ADD??

Question: I was diagnosed with ADD when I was a teenager, I'm 27 now and have coped with the disorder my whole life. I feel that it is a gift in many ways; for instance, I'm an engineer and I space out a lot thinking about math and physics, etc. I think spacing like that helps because it helps me visualize things and answer just seem to come to me sometimes. On the other hand though, I get off task a lot. I procrastinate on things until the last minute, and then I scramble to get a big project done. I would really like to be able to stay on task and be able to concentrate on something that I choose. However, I don't want to give up what may be a splendid gift.
Answers: Your natural gift is your birthright - treatment can't take that away. Successful treatment will give you the ability to cope with the planning and executing side of life. The real issue with some drug treatments is that they are not as perfect as doctors and pharmacutical companies would like you to believe, and they have side affects which may not be worth it.

Consider trying neurofeedback training to help develop the ability to cope - all the benefits without the side affects. For more information, go to eegspectrum.com.
You could try it for a little while, and always quit taking it.
hey i was diagnosed with ADD when i was 13. Ive tried alot of medications and some worked. The mediation did help me focus but i hated the side affects. It made my sleepy and ''emotion less'' Maybe you can take medication but in a small dose so you still concentrate but still feel like yourself. =]
All I can do is share with you what I know. My brother was diagnosed with ADHD when he was a kid. My mother had him on ritalin for awhile but she took him off. Now he is in his forties and you can totally see that his ADHD is still rampant. He can never settle down, always feeling like he has to be on the go. Chopping wood in the summer just to use up energy. So he finally went to the doctor and is taking some form of adderall and it has helped him a great deal. I never knew that ADHD or ADD could carry on in to adult hood. But it does. So do what is best for you. If you think it may help, try it.
My older brother has used this to his advantage without med's. I think it's important to realize that God gives gifts~talent....seek him through the bible and you will find yourself even more able!
If your ADD isn't significantly interfering with your life, I would stay off medications.

There is something called ADD coaching. (I have provided a link--scroll down the page until you find AD/HD Coaching.)

A coach may be able to help you organize your week, give you encouragement that this is an ADD problem--not a weakness, and help you to problem-solve when you get stuck.

Good luck!
I've never been diagnosed...but have the same symptoms. Seriously!!!
Just enjoy life - and as long as you are happy and it isn't 'disrupting' anything....DON T get on meds.
You are 27 - you have come this far....dude.
I would have to say no. i went on medication for ADD for a while and hated it. some types made me depressed and others made me angry. They are not really safe. It is like putting toxins in your body. Besides i enjoy the way I am and dont think there is anything wrong with me.
Perhaps your ADD was a natural filter to block out all the trash from your education so that you can realize your true purpose, which you did. I'd call that a gift, that few realize...
ADD was VOTED into existence as a disease at a convention of the American Psychiatric Association in the early 1980s! This is documented fact. It has no basis in science!
each of the school shooters was on some kind of antidepressant - prozac, ritalin, etc.
still think they are safe?
and there is no test for chemical imbalance in the brain! the president of the american psychiatriac association said so on nationwide television!
