Eye Exam for contacts.....no ins....?? Need advice??
Question: I don't have any vision insurance, but I need to either get contacts or have lasik. Since I am still young, 23, people have said to hol off on lasik. I know you do need a contact lens exam to get a contact lens prescription. Does anyone know the best/most affordable place to do this? Would lenscrafters be good, or someplace like Walmarts vision center be better?
Answers: Lenscrafters, Pearle Vision, Sears, they all have similar prices for contact lens exams. It fluctuates slightly state to state, but in Arizona I pay $90 for an eye exam and contact fitting (yes you have to have both). It is cheaper to buy your contacts off the internet. I usually get mine from Walgreens. I'm 25 and am still waiting to get Lasik because my eyes are so poor it can only be done once. I wear Focus Night & Day lenses, 30 days straight and I love them. They are very little trouble.
WalMart is probably one of the lesser expensive places, although, where I work, a contact lens exam and fitting is $79.95 and I think WalMart is actually more than that. I work for a local private office here where I live in PA. Costco is probably pretty affordable. Your best bet is to call around and find out. Some places offer discounts for AAA members, or military discounts (if that applies to you).
Good luck
I went to the Wal Mart Vision Center for my eye exam and contact lens fitting. I don't have vision insurance either, and it only cost me $91 total. The doctor will give a trial pair of contacts to wear for 2 weeks, and a copy of your prescription after your exam, so that you can order your contacts from anywhere you like, online or at an eye doctor's office. I was very satisfied with the service I received at the Wal Mart Vision Center, and the price was more than 50% cheaper than the eye doctor I used to use. They had told me around $200 for the exact same thing. The optometrists at Wal Mart Vision Centers are no different from the optometrists that have their own office building...
It wouldn't hurt to call a few different places though, to see how much each place wants for an exam with contact fitting. You never know; you might be able to find an even better deal...
I work for the largest eye clinic in Illinois.. do not get fitted into contacts at a place where you can also buy a pair of underwear and a gallon of milk! lol
If anything go to Pearle vision... at least its what they are known for.. eyes!
Where I work, for a newfit neverworn patient, we charge $190, and that includes the first initial visit, a visit at 3 weeks and a visit at 6 mos.. also includes 2 pair of trial lenses, and the practice session where you learn how to take care of them and put them in and take them out.
But again, please dont go to walmart or costco.. ick.
Good luck!
